Clio Newton (b. 1989) works in compressed charcoal, colored pencil, and oil. She sets her subjects against monochrome or bare paper, where they hold the viewer's gaze rather than submit to it. Her figures are self-possessed and present, but reveal little about their identity.
Newton's work is held in the collections of the Addison Gallery of American Art, Andover, MA; the Baltimore Museum of Art, MD; the Flint Institute of Arts, Flint, MI; the Fort Wayne Museum of Art, Fort Wayne, IN; and 21c Museum, Louisville, KY. She received the AKKU artist residency grant in Zürich, was selected as a top emerging artist by Artagon, Paris, and is a three-time recipient of the Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation grant.
Newton holds a BFA from The Cooper Union, New York, and an MFA from the Zürcher Hochschule der Künste, Zürich.
